Movie Review: “I Am Legend” isn’t exactly legendary
As great as Will Smith’s newest Hollywood blockbuster was, it didn’t live up to its title.
I Am Legend jumps right into action from the get-go, with no immediate background information or history, leaving you wondering how in the world New York City became a jungle in between 2009 and 2012.
As the movie goes on, however, history is revealed and pieces start to fall into place.
Despite this, I Am Legend has a pretty good plot line, but isn’t anything extraordinary. Smith does a great job with his character, and is the only person present in real-life time of the movie for about an hour. The flashbacks include the rest of his military family, but with the exception of a mother-son combo who enters at the end of the film, those are the only primary people present in the film.
The film dives into Smith’s life after New York City is destroyed. He’s the only survivor due to a cancer cure gone bad, and most of the movie is about how he survives. He gets through his daily life with the help of several mannequins and his wonderful dog, Sam.
Don’t get me wrong — it’s a very good movie, and if you get the chance to see it, you definitely should. But I expected a little more from the film that broke records in its December opening weekend.
It’s definitely an action-packed movie (I jumped several times throughout) and will thrill most audiences. But when you look at the downfalls of the film (no immediate history, fast paced, a little under an hour and a half), it doesn’t add up to five stars for me. It’s a great idea for a film, but I expected it to be much longer and with much more before-and-after types of things.
If you do see it, try to see it in IMAX. There’s a six-minute preview for the new Batman movie that’s definitely worth seeing.
