Movie Review: Hanks shines in Charlie’s War

smallwar.jpgI went into “Charlie Wilson’s War” with pretty high expectations.

I wasn’t let down.

After viewing the hour and a half movie, I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed how the story played out. It was a different kind of movie — even with moments that you dreaded — but overall it reached its potential.

The film discusses how congressman Charlie Wilson (played by Tom Hanks) goes about making an allied force to backup the Afghans in their weaponry (secretly) during their fight versus the Soviets. The true story follows Wilson’s quest to get weaponry and the right equipment to Afghanistan without officially endorsing their stance against Russia.

Hence the “cold war” name.

Overall, the film definitely has a lot of bright spots, and even has a few comedic points in there. Even in the theatre I saw it in, which was 90 percent filled with people who receive social security, there were moments of laughter.

So if a senior college student can enjoy it, and 80-something year olds can too, I’ll place my money on saying that this movie can hit home for audiences of all ages — as long as they’re 17 or older (as it’s R-rated).

Finally, I went into the film thinking that an hour and a half would be too short. After all, it’s based on a true story. And it’s about history…with a war. Those movies are usually at least two hours in length.

But I left the film satisfied, not wanting more, and not wanting less.

A light heartedness to an otherwise serious matter, “Charlie Wilson’s War” certainly impresses.
