“Atonement” comes up big in boycotted Globes

Cate Blanchett won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for her portrayal of Bob Dylan in “I’m Not There.”Boycotted by striking screenwriters and sympathetic actors, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association held its 65th Golden Globes awards ceremony in atypical fashion last night, following an anti-climactic press conference format that cost the industry millions in lost network and advertising fees. Despite the uncharacteristic lack of glitz, glamour and embarrassingly intoxicated acceptance speeches, however, the Globes capped a season many critics are hailing as better than anticipated - despite continued industry struggles at the box office.

Some highlights:

“Atonement” took home top honors last night, winning the coveted “Best Motion Picture - Drama” category by besting such others as “No Country for Old Men” and “There Will Be Blood.” “Atonement” is the critically acclaimed film adaptation of Ian McEwan’s 2002 novel of the same name. Directed by Joe Wright, “Atonement” stars Keira Knightley and James McAvoy in an epic of love, war, betrayal and redemption. Both Knightley and McAvoy were nominated for, but did not win, Golden Globe awards for their work in “Atonement.”

The historically successful pairing of director Tim Burton and iconic character actor Johnny Depp earned “Sweeney Todd” a similar nod, as the gruesome musical took home “Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.” Depp also earned a “Best Actor - Musical or Comedy” honor for the collaboration on Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning musical on the “Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” Marion Cotillard earned a “Best Actress - Musical or Comedy” Globe for her depiction of the singer Edith Piaf in “La Vie en Rose.”

Daniel Day-Lewis’ highly anticipated return to the screen as oil tycoon Daniel Plainview in “There Will Be Blood” earned the already decorated actor a “Best Actor - Drama” nod. Interestingly, the film, a loose adaptation of muckraker Upton Sinclair’s novel, “Oil!”, features an original score composed by popular Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood. Julie Christie won the Golden Globe for “Best Actress - Drama” for her portrayal of Fiona Anderson, a woman suffering from Alzheimer’s disease in “Away from Her.”

Cate Blanchett won the honors in the “Best Supporting Actress - Drama” for her depiction of Bob Dylan in “I’m Not There” - a performance that led Peter Travers of Rolling Stone to declare the Oscar-winning actress “some kind of miracle.” Javier Bardem won the award for “Best Supporting Actor - Drama” in “No Country for Old Men” - the Coen brothers’ film adaptation of the critically acclaimed novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy. Ethan and Joel Coen together won “Best Screenplay” for their work on the project.
