Steroid issues go unresolved on Capitol Hill
Roger Clemens finally got the chance to speak to the public on Wednesday under oath, over allegations that Brian McNamee had provided him with Human Growth Hormone (HGH) and anabolic steroids.
Throughout the entire process, Clemens stuck to his story that he has never taken either of the drugs, despite testimony by teammate Andy Pettitte and McNamee’s evidence that he provided. When asked repeatedly about conversations that occurred between Clemens and Pettitte in 1999 and 2005, Clemens said that his teammate “misremembered” the conversations.
Both Clemens and McNamee were reminded repeatedly that they were under oath, possibly facing perjury charges in the future. That, however, did not change responses from either party.
Many congress members seemed to show a bias to believing McNamee’s evidence, however McNamee was not completely clean. It was shown that he had lied to officers for an unrelated investigation, as well as not saying everything that he knew about the steroid investigation. In addition, McNamee was said to be a “drug dealer” at times by one particular congressman.
That, however, did not excuse Clemens — both Pettitte and Chuck Knoblauch testified earlier this week under oath that McNamee was telling the truth in the Mitchell Report.
Representatives said that documents will be released to the media and the public regarding the investigation sometime this week.
The day was possibly summed up best by Rep. Elijah Cummings while speaking directly to Clemens: “And you’re telling me that Andy Pettitte is an honest man, and his credibility is pretty much impeccable. … You said you were misunderstood. But all I’m saying is, it’s hard to believe. It’s hard to believe your story.”
