Six dead, 16 wounded in NIU shooting
A shooting at a Northern Illinois University lecture hall on Thursday left six people dead and injured 16 others.
The shooter, NIU alumni Steven P. Kazmierczak, was said to have gone off medication before the shooting occurred. He killed five students before taking his own life.
During his time at NIU, Kazmierczak was known to be “an awarded student. He was someone that was revered by the faculty and staff and students alike,” according to University police chief Donald Grady.
Kazmierczak had last attended the school in 2006 as a graduate student in sociology.
The College remained closed on Friday as police continued its investigation. Police have thus far not found a motive for the attack.
The attack is the first major college shooting since last spring’s Virginia Tech massacre, which left 32 dead.
