American Family Association serves a Whopper on McDonalds

Somewhere, under a smiling sunshine, Tinky Winky is rolling in his grave.

Last month, Business Manager John Taylor wrote a piece entitled “Coffee and Christianity,” wherein he rightly rejected efforts by a Christian group called “The Resistance” to label Starbucks “Slutbucks” over its new, hardly scandalous logo. In a similar vein, today I’d like to draw attention to the American Family Association’s announcement that it will boycott fast-food chain McDonald’s for “promoting the homosexual agenda.”

Apparently, the controversy erupted after McDonald’s Vice President of Communications Richard Ellis accepted an invitation to serve on the Board of Directors of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC). McDonald’s - which is standing by its man - was then informed by the AFA that the group would initiate the boycott.

AFA President Donald Wildmon said the situation is “strange” because “it’s the family that McDonald’s appeals to - children’s playland, you know, all the little toys, all of that. And they are promoting a lifestyle that would utterly destroy the traditional family.”

Yes, that is what he said. It’s not a misprint. What Donald Wildmon is saying, essentially, is that even though homosexuality (according to those that align with the AFA) is a choice, gay marriage would absolutely, “utterly destroy the traditional family.” After all, according to this bunch, you’re either with us…or against us. This is, after all, the age of terrorism, and when McDonald’s begins to “treat our employees and our customers with respect and dignity, regardless of their ethnicity, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other factors,” then, then is when the terrorist will have won.

I’m lovin’ it.

Editor’s Note: The last quotation is taken from the statement issued by McDonald’s in response to Wildmon’s letter, as posted at Think Progress. It should also be noted that the American Family Association has a history of pointless boycotts, including its 9-year boycott of Walt Disney World for “its embrace of the homosexual lifestyle.” The boycott was obviously unsuccessful and was called off in 2005.
