Sisters celebrate yearly Jubilee

The Grand Rapids Dominicans, whose Sisters originally founded Aquinas College in 1886, hold the Jubilee Celebration each year to honor the sisters who stuck with their commitment to God for 25, 50, 60, 70, 75, and even 80 years.

The vow of a sister is not an easy one. It includes a life of celibacy, piety, “preaching the Gospel of Jesus, the gospel of hope,” and an unfailing devotion to God based on the principles of the Catholic Church. “Compare it with the reason that married couples celebrate their anniversary…it’s a celebration of a faithful commitment.” explains Sister Janet Mish, an expert on the Dominican convent’s Jubilee Celebration, who celebrated her 50 year anniversary in 2001.

Among the 33 Sisters honored this year, three are Aquinas staff. Sister Katrina Hartman, chemistry professor, Sister Alice Wittenbach, Aquinas graduate and also the Coordinator of Alumni Class Reunions, and Sister Diane Dehn, academic advisor, all celebrated their 50-year Jubilee this past summer.

When asked about the special meaning of her Jubilee celebration, Sister Alice Wittenbach said, “My Jubilee celebration here at Aquinas was really wonderful. I was touched by the thought that we would all be able to celebrate this milestone of Dominican life together. I am grateful.” The celebration took place during the convent’s annual Dominican Days gathering.

The entire Dominican Family continues to acknowledge their 800 year anniversary since St. Dominic’s foundation of the community of women at Prouilhe, France with a ten year celebration that began in 2006.
