MLS gears up for championship
This Sunday, the MLS Championship will be played to determine who the top soccer team in America is. The finalists for this year are without a doubt the most unlikely teams to ever be in the Cup final. The Columbus Crew and the New York Red Bulls (Yes, named after the energy drink) compete for the 12th MLS Cup.
Columbus came out of the Eastern Conference as the top seed on their side of the bracket. After beating Kansas City and the Chicago Fire, the Crew are in the finals. For those who don’t know much about soccer, know this – since MLS began, the Crew has been the worst team in the league in disgraceful fashion. Now, the Crew, who serve as the local team for Michigan, is in the finals after years of being mediocre (A sign of hope for Lions fans?).
For the Red Bulls, they come into the Cup final as a wild-card from the West. In MLS, the last two spots in each conference are determined by most points no matter what conference you are in. If you know one thing about the Red Bulls, know this – the Red Bulls go through one coach about every one and a half years, and the constant hiring and firing of coaches has destroyed the franchise. The Red Bulls are in the final after upsetting Houston and then beating Salt Lake.
Cup prediction: Columbus 2, New York 0
